Next year’s edition of the Miss Universe pageant could take on some island flavor, if future negotiations take shape.

Dimitri Kosvogianis, lead organizer of the Miss Jamaica Universe beauty pageant, hopes the bring Miss Universe to the island in 2013 and has already submitted a proposal stating his intent. During an event unveiling the 17 contestants for this year’s Miss Jamaica Universe crown at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston, Kosvoganis intimated that bringing the international pageant to Jamaica would mark a major upgrade to an already prominent local tourism sector.

"My passion is to place Jamaica at the forefront of the tourism market in this side of the world, and having such an event in Jamaica would greatly assist our efforts here,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

According to Kosvoganis, his proposal was recently sent to the main Miss Universe organizers in New York but has not yet been reviewed given their preparations for this year’s event in South Africa. However, the internationally-regarded hotelier revealed that said organizers would love to stage the 60-year-old event in Jamaica.

Should the island host next year’s edition of Miss Universe, Kosvoganis and other local organizers would be slapped with a US$5 million budget to stage the pageant. However, the Greek-born businessman thinks the money can easily be raised through public and private sector sponsorship.

"The Jamaica Tourist Board spends just under half of this figure on advertising in the European markets, and when one considers the reach of the Miss Universe pageant, this would be money well spent," he said.

Meanwhile, the final selection for the Miss Jamaica Universe crown will take place in June in an attempt to accommodate younger contestants who have school obligations up until May.
