Miss South Africa, Melinda Bam ready to hit the ground running
Her reign as queen kicked off on a high note when Melinda Bam, crowned Miss SA on Sunday night, rushed between media interviews and meetings with various stakeholders within 12 hours of being crowned.
At breakfast the 22-year-old was swarmed by well-wishers and fans, who stopped her to congratulate her and have pictures taken with her.
“After last night I slept like a baby and I’m ready to work hard,” she said.
Melinda promised to “jump in and swim” just after she snatched the prestigious title at the Sun City Superbowl.
She said her passions included working with abused women and children and would continue working on the illiteracy eradication projects of building libraries and schools, piloted by her predecessor Bokang Montjane.
“She is a very determined person and when she sets out to do something she doesn’t give up until she succeeds,” her mother Wanda said.
Speaking during a break between helping her daughter go from one assignment to the other at Sun City yesterday, Bam said the family was prepared for the year ahead.
“Next year will be a hectic year. Besides what she has to do as part of her reign, Melinda has a lot of other projects planned,” she said.
Melinda recently completed her BCom degree in marketing at the University of Pretoria and will take next year off to concentrate on her title duties.
In 2013 she will go on to study towards an Honour’s degree and plans on opening up a business soon thereafter, one she says would benefit others who have the same dreams and ambitions as she does.
The blonde beauty beat 11 other girls to the title in an event which brought local celebrities, government officials and members of the public decked out in their best.
Local actors, comedians and singers were among those who walked the red carpet leading to the event earlier that evening. They were stopped and asked about their choice of attire. Some former holders of the title were in attendance, as were models and others in the beauty industry. The entertainment for the night was provided by veteran musician Sipho Hotsticks Mabuse, RJ Benjamin, Big Nuz and LeAnne who played while the girls showcased their beauty in various designer clothes. Their intelligence was put to the test when they were given randomly chosen questions from the public, and while some responded well, others stumbled through their responses, drawing groans of disapproval from the audience.
