Roxanne Smith was crowned Miss Earth England

Roxanne Smith from Erdington
A BELLE from Birmingham is going global after winning the chance to be crowned Miss Earth.
Roxanne Smith, aged 22, is set to represent England in the world-wide heats of the eco beauty contest after dazzling British judges.

Operations administrator Roxanne, from Short Heath Road, Erdington, said: “I am so excited. My little sister was in the audience cheering me on and it is for her that winning Miss Earth means so much to me.

“We need to preserve the environment for the next generations to come, we don’t want them to have to grow up and not know what an elephant or tiger looks like, unless they look in a book or have no parks to play on and enjoy the greenery.”

To win, Roxanne had to take part in a number of rounds including a vintage cocktail dress round, and was challenged to hand-make a recycled designer couture outfit from bottle tops, plastic bags, bin liners, newspapers, magazines and sweet packets.

As part of her prize she walked away with a custom-made luxury Little Earth recycled handbag made from car number plates, a modelling contact, a Miss Earth fashion shoot and a range of clothes and beauty products.

Roxanne follows in the footsteps of Handsworth beauty queen Sandra Lees who represented England in Miss Earth last year.

She will now help promote and attend personal appearances in England to raise environmental awareness for a clean and healthy environment, with the three Rs message – reduce, reuse and recycle.

Roxanne will also help a range of environmental campaigns across England throughout her reign. She said: “I am really looking forward to promoting and working with companies who share the same aims as Miss Earth across England.”

Miss Earth is one of the biggest and most prestigious beauty events in the world with contestants from more than 100 countries set to take part in December. The winner of Miss Earth 2011 will be crowned in a live televised coronation with the overall winner becoming an ambassador to environmental schemes worldwide.
